Food and Drink across Devon and Cornwall

Upon arrival at Borough Farm, settle into your yurt and you will find some of our delicious homemade elderflower cordial to refresh you. Each yurt is also stocked with tea, coffee, sugar, milk, salt, pepper and olive oil.

Why not let us ease you into your holiday at Devon Yurt with a homemade one pot dish for your first evening meal. Choices range from vegetable lasagne, chilli con carne, turkey or lamb curry, fish pie, cassoulet , beef or broccoli and brie wellington, There are also BBQ boxes on offer if you wish to light a fire and barbeque under the stars. For an easy first morning, order a ‘cook it yourself breakfast basket’ to kick start your first day, with full English, continental or vegetarian option available you will be spoilt for choice.

We source mainly from local suppliers for our catering needs so this makes a very tasty option. Fruit and vegetable boxes and picnic hampers containing fresh local produce can also be pre- ordered. At Borough farm we grow our own fruit and vegetables, so seasonal produce is available for you too – you won’t believe how fresh food tastes with zero food miles! P.S. grannies’ tomatoes from a few miles down the road are pretty good too! Feel free to pick your own herbs from the courtyard garden to compliment your own gastronomic creations. If you are holidaying to celebrate a special event, you can pre-order a delicious home baked aga cake ranging from lemon drizzle to chocolate cloud cake.

Eating out

When you finally head out from Borough Farm you will be in for a further treat, West Devon is such a foodie place, you will be spoilt for choice, there are many quaint Devon villages with pubs serving great food. Being on the edge of Dartmoor these can be easily laced into your plans for the day.

The Dartmoor Inn at Lydford (15 min) is a firm favourite of ours – try their chocolate pots for sheer decadence 01822 820221. The Peter Tavy Inn (20 min) has generous tasty portions, low beams and log fires make for a great atmosphere and with a playground across the road it is easy to please everyone. 01822 810348.

The Elephants nest (20 min) has a great beer garden for relaxing in, at the weekend you can even observe the local cricket match in the adjacent field. 01822 810273. If you want a good Local’s pub The Blacksmith’s Arms at Lamerton (5min) is a great choice, they serve a great steak and also has an extensive specials menu as well as a good pint 01822 612962.

Particularly good is the award-winning Cornish Arms in Tavistock (10 min) which has some of the best food in the neighbourhood, guests have been known to return here night after night! Best to book ahead to secure a table to avoid disappointment tel.01822 612145.

If heading into Cornwall, The Springer Spaniel at Treburley (15 min) caters for everyone’s needs by offering a range of menus from a full taster menu to a pub meal. Sunday lunches are particularly popular, here for every adult eating a meal, a child eats free! tel. 01579 370424. If it is Sunday lunch you crave then head to Coombeshead Farm in Lewannick (10min) recently voted one of the best Sunday lunches in the country, using local ingredients chef Tom Adams creates stunning dishes 01566 782009. The Eliot arms at Tregadillet (10 min) is a quirky pub filled with clocks, again with generous portions and a good local vibe. Tel: 01566 772051.

For a light lunch locally, The Little Bakehouse cafe (10min) serves great soups and bakery items including their award winning sour dough bread. 01566 248029.

If you are looking for a celebratory meal or a delicious cream tea then head to Hotel Endsleigh (5min) where you can dine overlooking the Tamar in the grade ll listed gardens, this is Olga Polizzi’s hotel and very much worth a visit. The Horn of Plenty (5 min) near Gulworthy is a beautiful house overlooking the Tamar valley serving excellent local produce. 01822 832528. Gidleigh Park in Chagford (40 min) is a stunning luxury hotel overlooking the river Teign – totally deserving of its 2 Michelin stars, this is a real treat to visit. Great for lunch, afternoon tea or dinner, combine it with a gentle walk through the stunning grounds or a game of croquet in the garden. Tel. 01647 432367.

The Treby Arms (60min) is definitely worth the journey this is a delightfully rustic country pub also with a Michelin starred restaurant with an exquisite freshly prepared menu. Tel. 01752 837363.

If heading to Devon’s south coast, The Oyster Shack is a must (55min), serving deliciously fresh prawns, crabs, lobster and obviously oysters, it is certainly a favourite of ours, head to Bigbury or South Milton Sands, afterwards to round off an afternoon, tel. 01548 81876.

Shops and Markets

With such a wonderful range of independent shops in the area we very rarely need to venture into a large supermarket although there is plenty of choice if this is what you want.

Both Tavistock (10min) or Launceston (10min) have a wonderful range of delis including the award-winning cheese shop in Tavistock which sells exclusively Westcountry cheeses. Amble through the Pannier Markets to find locally crafted food, In Launceston head to Warrens which is an excellent butchery and the Little Bakehouse for a magical range of sourdough breads.

More locally, the Farm Shop at Lifton serves everything from cornish pasties to scones to ice cream and artisan beers and ciders. Tavistock has an excellent farmers market on the 2nd and 4th Sat. of each month where local producers display their wares including the Salcombe fish wife for excellent local crab. Hatherleigh has a great market on Tuesday mornings, you will find all sorts of produce on sale here, you can even see chickens and ducks auctioned – just be careful not to raise your hand or you could become a proud owner!

The Loft

When guests book Devon Yurt exclusively, there is the added option of using The Loft for a group dining experience. Gather for Breakfasts, lunch, Dinner or a special party occasion. Sit on Pews reclaimed from a local chapel and draped with our very own luxurious sheepskins. Food is served on large vintage trestle tables which create a perfect space for a get together with family and friends. The atmosphere changes through the day from a bright airy sun lit space during the day to one with a soft romantic candle lit evening vibe.

The Larder

The Larder at Borough stocks delicious supplies of our very own elderflower cordial, our home-made preserves, eggs laid by our friendly farm hens and seasonal home-grown produce. In addition, there are some snacks for the little ones, baking potatoes in foil, and marshmallow toasting kits for that very important evening activity! The larder is open each day, simply tally your purchases on your chalkboard and settle your slate at the end of your stay.

BBQ coals, locally sourced wood and eco-friendly firelighters are also available for campsite cooking. Don’t forget to feed the wildlife, you can even purchase some bird seed here for your feeder!
