Wild Swimming in West Devon

There are so many wild swimming opportunities in our area here in West Devon it is difficult to know where to start.  Here are some of our favourite places off the beaten track.

Dartmoor national park has to be one of our favourite places to head to on a hot summer’s day to escape the busier spots on the beaches,  pack a picnic,   or gather some tasty local pasties from the farm shop and a flask plus a few cold drinks to pop into a cooling pool and you are set for a treat of an afternoon.   One of our favourite places is below widgery cross near the village of lydford, here you will find gentle streams which are great for paddling or for cooling off your four legged friend,  walk along the river a little further downstream from the stepping stones and you will also find a most wonderful plunge pool complete with little fishes !

The North Cornwall coast has to be a strong option,  take a trip to Trebarwith Strand on a low tide and it will reveal a lovely pool suitable for little ones to bathe in,  the waves are good here so a body board is always a good idea.  At high tide you cannot get into the sea easily – so best to watch the tide times and choose your day carefully.  There is a pub looking out over the bay,  a wonderful cafe selling delicious crab sandwiches and a very useful cup of coffee or deliciously thick italian style hot chocolate to die for !  If you can wait around for the sun set here you are in for a treat,  a favourite of ours is to barbecue some sausages whilst perched on the rocks above the bay and watch the sun go down over the horizon. Perfect !

Near the town of Tavistock is a place called Grenofen where you can park your car,  grab your loved ones and head down stream through wonderfully shaded woodland where you will find several bathing spots with sandy shores along the river.  If you are feeling energetic,  keep going along this path until you get to the point where two rivers meet,  this is known locally as double waters.  Here is a wonderful pool to swim in,  take a picnic and make an afternoon of it.  Wonderful !
