Why is it called The Shippon?
Introducing our newest addition here at Borough Farm…. The Shippon, named after the old English name for cow barn and those of you who have been visiting us at Borough Farm for a while will remember this log store with the table tennis table taking pride of place in the barn, you may have noticed that there was a channel running through the centre of the barn, this channel was the evidence of the old shippon’s previous use as a milking parlour, the channel being used to wash down the barn after the cows had been milked by the family who previously owned Borough, the Eggins. Each cow would generally take their own favoured spot in the Shippon, and Blackie, one of Roger Eggins’ favourite cows took the space at the back of the barn, which is now the bathroom. To honour “Blackie” we have fixed her old tethering bar to the bathroom wall. Just where she liked to stand. The old cow branding iron stands on the windowsill further giving a nod to this space’s heritage.
The Shippon, in its new life, has been carefully and practically designed as a beautiful suite for two with a kitchen area, seating, restful bedroom space with a modern look, king sized oak bed and a beautiful bathroom with a stunning antique free standing roll topped bath – in fact the “Dartmoor” bath which for 15 years took centre stage in our bath tent.
We have kept as many original barn features as possible, the slit arrow windows, chunky wooden windowsills, the hinges of the old doors, the breeze block above the door the lime wash on the walls, all in recognition of the buildings’ heritage, but also, we have created a serene and clean flowing space for you to enjoy your relaxing Devon Holiday, a full picture window provides views towards the stables, allowing you to watch the antics of the chickens as well as the ponies resting their heads over the stable doors, white doves fly overhead and you can see the woods in the distance.
A glazed half door, opens out into the courtyard, an area for you to sit and enjoy some outdoor space , to collect herbs from the garden, to have a BBQ, or to join our sociable Thursday Pizza nights, take a glass of something cold or toast marshmallows on the fire pit – enjoy the dark night sky here at Borough Farm where the stars really do put on a show.
If you can bear to venture from your barn, there is so much to do in the area, Just 10 min by car to Brentor church an iconic corner of Dartmoor National Park, or visit one of the many National trust properties in the area, Lydford gorge, Cotehele and Buckland Abbey and Castle Drogo, all within 30 min by car or venture to the North Cornwall coast for some wild swimming in a sea pool swim or throw yourselves into the waves with some body boarding.
